Psychologists and Telehealth/Telephone Medicare Consultations
CoronaVirus Update
Due to the unfolding Coronavirus situation this practice is now offering Telehealth consultations either via video such as Skype, WhatsApp or Viber and via Telephone where clinically appropriate. Government requirements are that telehealth consultations must be bulk billed for Commonwealth concession card holders, children under 16 years of age, and patients who are more vulnerable to COVID-19. You will still need a referral, or an already existing referral, such as a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or other plans e.g. Eating Disorders, Pregnancy Support, Chronic Illness.
Psychologists and Medicare
Since 1st November 2006 Medicare Rebates have been available for treatment of mental disorders by all registered psychologists who have been granted a Medicare Provider Number by Medicare Australia. To receive treatment under the new Medicare Items you must be referred to a Psychologist by a General Practitioner (GP), Psychiatrist or Paediatrician. Your GP will need to complete a mental health treatment plan before referring you. If you are seeking a referral please tell your GPs receptionist when you book your session as a slightly longer appointment will be necessary.
The current situation is that in any one calendar year, clients are allowed a maximum of 10 single consultations plus 10 consultations as a member of a group.
Of course you may continue seeing a psychologist after you have used all your Medicare visits but you will then only be covered by you Health Insurer. We are registered with Medicare and with all the major health insurance providers in Australia.
Before visiting any psychologist you can check their current registration status here.
